And this is the vision Immanuel Kant drew on in What Is Enlightenment ? (1784), in which he defined pre-Enlightenment man as being caught under self-incurred tutelage, incapable of using his own understanding or reason, and dependent on others for his thoughts and actions, be it the pastor to act as his conscience or the physician to prescribe his diet.
